I have been fascinated by Antarctica all of my life. In 1997 I was lucky enough to be able to travel “South” for a short time. Polar landscapes render the term “abstract” meaningless. These paintings address this question of reality vs. imagination by attempting to bring the beauty of Antarctica to our world here. In general, my work is more “realistic” and representational which can be a surprise if you’re not familiar with the Antarctic landscape. Painting ice also reminds me of the transitory nature of water. Of course, ice melts, but some of these scenes included ice that was millions of years old. Global warming is another factor which makes me want to document this landscape before it changes beyond recognition. More works at www.lisagorenpaintings.com
Deborah Kamy Hull paints and draws the skies, terrain, trees, and waters of the New England landscape. A resident of Boston, Hull is an employee of Harvard Medical School and a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute and Boston University College of Fine Arts. More of her work can be seen at www.deborahkamyhull.com.
My paintings began as design plans for quilts. Once I began working in gouache as opposed to pen and ink, the ‘designs’ quickly evolved into paintings for their own sake as opposed to steps to another medium. As time went on, the gouache changed from simpler shapes to increasingly complex studies of shape and color. With each additional painting that I do, I try to perfect the relationship between warm and cool colors, geometric and organic shapes, and between my hand and the brush. I know I’ll never get there but it’s a lot of fun to try.
